The journey of Umrah, step by step

Scroll to walk from your intention at home to Tawaf, Sa'i and the peace of Madinah, and see what a package covers at each step.

Begin the journey ↓
Before you begin

Eight steps, one journey

Ihram, the Talbiyah, the first sight of the Kaaba, seven circuits of Tawaf, two rak'ahs and Zamzam, Sa'i, Halq or Taqsir, then Madinah.

Tip: turn up your volume for the Talbiyah on step 2.

Step 1 · At home

It begins with an intention

Every Umrah starts long before the airport, with a sincere intention and a little planning: when to go, who travels with you, and how close to the Haram you want to stay.

What your package covers: Your operator checks your passport, arranges the visa and books hotels that are registered for Umrah visas.

Step 2 · At the Miqat

Ihram and the Talbiyah

Before crossing the Miqat you enter Ihram. Men wear two plain white sheets; women wear modest everyday clothes. Then the call begins:

لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ

Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, labbayk la sharika laka labbayk

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am."

What your package covers: Pilgrims flying to Jeddah usually change into Ihram before the flight. Your operator tells you when the plane nears the Miqat.

Step 3 · Masjid al-Haram

The first sight of the Kaaba

Walking through the gates of Masjid al-Haram and seeing the Kaaba for the first time is a moment pilgrims never forget. Many stop here to make du'a.

What your package covers: How long this walk takes depends on your hotel. A Haram-view hotel is a few minutes away; an economy hotel can mean a bus ride.

Step 4 · Tawaf

Seven circuits around the Kaaba

Starting at the line of the Black Stone, you walk around the Kaaba seven times, anticlockwise, in remembrance and prayer.

1of 7 circuits

What your package covers: Close to the Kaaba each circuit is short but crowded; on the upper floors it is longer but calmer. Wheelchairs and electric carts are available.

Step 5 · Maqam Ibrahim

Two rak'ahs, then Zamzam

After Tawaf you pray two rak'ahs, behind the Maqam Ibrahim if there is space, then drink the water of Zamzam.

What your package covers: Zamzam coolers stand throughout the mosque, and many operators give each pilgrim Zamzam to take home.

Step 6 · Sa'i

Seven walks between Safa and Marwah

You walk between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times, remembering Hajar's search for water for her son Isma'il.

Safa1 of 7Marwah

What your package covers: The Mas'a is indoors and air-conditioned, with separate lanes for wheelchairs.

Step 7 · Complete

Halq or Taqsir: your Umrah is complete

Men shave or shorten their hair, and women cut a fingertip's length. With that, Umrah is complete and the restrictions of Ihram end.

What your package covers: Barbers wait near the Marwah end of the Mas'a. Many pilgrims then rest at the hotel before the next prayer.

Then · Madinah

Peace at the Prophet's Mosque

Most pilgrims also spend days in Madinah, praying at Masjid an-Nabawi under its green dome. It is not part of Umrah itself, but few journeys feel complete without it.

What your package covers: Your operator arranges road or train travel between the cities. Visiting the Rawdah needs a time slot booked in the official Nusuk app.
